Stop Drinking So Much Coffee

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that drinking even one cup of coffee a day can produce withdrawal symptoms.  More people may be addicted to coffee than you suspect. Basically, caffeine, however taken, is a drug that causes neural activity that makes your adrenal glands produce adrenalin. This is the chemical that’s designed to put your body into a fight or flight state. We think of caffeine in coffee, tea and chocolate as the “wake-me-up” chemical. There is some evidence to suggest that chronic drinking of it can cause chronic fatigue. It can also cause constant headaches, moodiness, and depression for some people.  Caffeine is the most widely taken drug on the planet.  Obviously, it isn’t just your cup of coffee that is the culprit, tea and chocolate also contain the drug. Many soft drinks actively promote its use!

Why am I addicted to coffee?

Firstly it is a chemical addiction.  Drinking tea, coffee etc causes the adrenal glands to release adrenalin, as we have said. What happens as a consequence is the initial ‘hit’ as the adrenalin gets into your blood. This is, basically, a ‘stress’ response. This stress response usually wear off after an hour or two. Then the person beings to feel tired. They will often have more caffeine to bring their energy levels back up again.  Sometimes, people will also eat something high in sugar, which also gives the short term energy boost. So the blood sugar level goes up and down.. As with any drug, prolonged usage builds up resistance. In extreme cases, even with dozens of cups of coffee a day the person remains feeling burnt out. This is because the adrenal glands have been strained to exhaustion point.

Secondly it is a ‘psychological’ habit. It is an automated sequence in your neurology that repeats like a movie in your mind on a constant loop.
