Hypnosis
Hypnosis is one of the models of NLP, but it’s not usually what people expect. To me, everyone is already in a trance (shopping trance, driving trance, wine-bar trance etc) and my job is not so much to get them into trance but to get them out of the trance they turn up with. From the moment the client walks through the door I am constantly using hypnotic language patterns even when they think I am just talking about the weather. It’s a bit tricky to describe how this is done, though those who have seen Derran Brown may have seen the way he embeds words within words to influence someone’s thoughts and behaviour.
I do use more ‘official’ hypnosis regularly, getting the client to deeply relax and using a range of techniques from direct hypnotic commands, suggestions and indirect metaphor, though it’s usually not necessary to sort Bulimia.
What Do You Want?
The most important question I ask someone who walks through the door is simply ‘what do you want’. Only one in a thousand clients actually answer the question as asked. Usually, they tell me what they don’t want.
Even with ‘insomnia’, no-one has ever told me what they want. Ever. They always say, ‘I don’t want insomnia, I don’t want not to be able to sleep, I don’t want to keep waking up etc’. It’s just the way of things.
But, if you don’t know where you are going, how on earth do you expect to get there? It’s like trying to drive whilst only focussing on the rear view mirror. Whether you are boiling an egg or running a multi-national company, unless you plan where you are going you will screw it up. With boiling an egg you don’t tend to need a flow chart, and if you have done it many times it’s not a massively conscious task. But you have to think about all aspects ahead of time for it to work, otherwise you may forget to put the toaster on…
Unless you ‘plan’ where you are going, ie think about where you ARE going, not where you don’t want to go, you will remain in the loop. My job is to use NLP to get people out of the bulimia loop, and much more importantly, to help them aim themselves where they want to go. The best thing about the past is that it’s over, which means, essentially, all the problems you have had only exist as memories.
The best thing about the future is that it hasn’t happened yet, and you can guide yourself into states of excellence much more easily than you thought. Bulimia, even extreme cases of throwing up several times a day, for years, can often be sorted in just 2 – 3 sessions, and sometimes 1 suffices.
Hope this is OK Anna, these things (for me) are easier to do than explain.
Best Wishes
