‘Medical’ Fears And Phobias

‘Medical’ is a term we are using loosely to describe a variety of phobias. Broadly speaking, there are phobias of medical treatment, such as the fear of doctors, dentists, hospitals, surgery and needles. Then there are the fears of the diseases themselves, such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, and heart attacks. Then there is the more general condition that is called hypochondria. Follow the links below for more in-depth information.

'Medical' Phobias

Alzheimer’s Disease
This is a very common fear and recent study indicated that it was the biggest fear amongst Americans in the over 55 age group. We can help you to stop being afraid of getting, or even having Alzheimer’s disease. Afraid of Alzheimer’s disease.
Cancer (Getting Cancer)
Twenty-five percent of UK adults say that Cancer is their main fear, according to the charity Cancer Research. It’s not surprising, really, many of us have had friends or family who have been ill with, or who have died from the disease. Extreme fear, or phobia, is only very rarely a useful response, and it is a ‘learned’ behaviour that can be unlearned. Fear of getting cancer.
Cancer (Having Cancer)
If you have cancer and are terrified of it, or if you have had the disease and you no longer have it but are plagued by fears of its recurrence, then treatment can be provided to get you to come to terms with having (and fighting) the disease, or to retrain your imagination so that it is fully under your control, to stop being scared of cancer ‘coming back’. Afraid of having cancer.
Dental Phobia – Fear Of Going To The Dentist
It’s quite understandable that many people are scared to go to the dentist as many have the memories of a painful experience whilst undergoing dental treatment when they were younger.  The other factor that often contributes to dental phobia is the fear of not being in control. Obviously if you avoid dental treatment then you are potentially storing up trouble for the future. It is time to sort it out. Dental Phobia.
Doctor Phobia
Obviously there may be a whole host of reasons why someone may develop the fear of going to the doctor. Very often it is terror of getting ‘bad news. It does not matter how or why you became so scared, it is very possible to sort this out with NLP and hypnotherapy. Fear Of Doctors
Fear of Being Sick (Emetophobia)
Usually emetophobia is the result of a childhood experience of being sick which then generalises into a phobic response. We have seen people for this who have managed to control themselves to the point where they haven’t been physically sick for decades. This can be a horrible phobia for someone to have. We can usually help to cure emetophobia. Phobia of being sick.
Fear of Having Heart Attacks
This is quite often the fear or having another heart attack, as a result of past heart problems. It is quite understandable that someone is scared of another potentially life threatening incident. However, the stress and worry about the recurrence of heart problems are hardly conducive to future health. It is possible to learn to be more relaxed and at ease about the health of your heart, whatever your circumstances. Fear of heart attacks.
Hospital Phobia - Fear of Hospitals
Hospitals are sometimes places that produce great joy and happiness. Events like the birth of a child, or a successful operation or a life saved are often high points in a person’s life. However they are often also places associated with pain, grief and death. If you have developed a phobia of hospitals, however it cam about, then it is most definitely worth sorting out as soon as possible, potentially for the sake of your own life. Phobia of hospitals.
Hypochondria
Hypochondria can take many forms, though essentially it is the fear of getting ill, or having an illness. Stress is recognised as being a big factor in many illnesses, so the person who lives in a constant state of stress about their health is not helping themselves be well. Then they are often stresses about being stressed and the whole thing forms an unhealthy loop. We can help you get out of the loop and think more positively. Overcome hypochondria.
Needle Phobia - Fear of Needles
Very few people actually enjoy injections, but if you have developed an intense fear or phobia of them then not only will you be unable to have inoculations against disease, you might also find it impossible to have urgent medical treatment. We have given successful treatments for the phobia of needles for years, so let us help you. Phobia of needles.
Phobia of Surgery - Fear of Surgery and or Anaesthesia
This manifests in a couple of ways, either the person is terrified about a forthcoming operation or they live in fear of operations and surgery generally. Phobia of surgery.
