Information About Massage Therapy
What is Massage Therapy?
Massage Therapy is one of the fastest growing forces in the field
of health care. The term massage is believed to be derived from the
greek word 'Massein' - 'to knead'.
Originating at least as early
as 400BC, the technique first appears in ancient Chinese medical
manuscripts. It spread from ancient China to Rome and was well known
in both the imperial and republican Roman periods. With the coming
of the dark ages in Europe, Massage Therapy was lost to the west
untill re-introduced by the Swedish physician Peter Ling. It is from
this re-introduction that the technique became known as 'Swedish
Massage'.
The Massage therapist works through his hands to identify and treat both
physical and emotional problems. The pressure and stretching movements
are applied to the soft tissues of the body producing
bio-mechanical reactions which loosen joints and help break up
fibrous tissue. acids and any deposited toxins are also forced out.
In addition Massage Therapy applied to certain areas known as meridians
cause natural reflexes within the body to help inflamed and damaged areas
remote from the actual point of contact, thus a therapist may treat
a condition present in a particular part of the body by working on
a different area conected only to the affected zone by the afore
mentioned meridians.
What happens during a Massage Therapy session ?
The patient is normally lying down and undressed with areas of the body
not being treated covered by towels.
treatment normally starts with a lite contact to accustom the patient
to the sensation af massage, often on the back or feet will be the
initial areas covered with the therapist eventually working over
the whole body. To increase comfort and avoid friction the therapist
will employ Talcolm powder or lubricating oils, the whole experience
is deeply relaxing. A session normally takes about an hour to an
hour and a half, the number of sessions required will depend on the
severity of a patients condition.
The Massage therapist will first work to relief symptoms, moving on to
correct the problem, and strengthen the affected area. After a course
of initial treatment it will usually be advisable to continue
with maintenance sessions to avoid problems re-occuring.
