Information About Lymphatic Therapy
What is Lymphatic Therapy ?
Lymphatic therapy, also known as Combined Decongestive Therapy or the
The Vodder Method is primarily a treatment for a condition known
as Lymphoedema. The lymphatic system can become damaged causing blockages
and eventually lead to oedema (swelling). This swelling is sometimes mistaken
for obesity but the lack of effective results from even very strict dietary
regimes would indicate that this is not so.
The two types of Lymphoedema - Primary and Secondary present similar symptoms although the causes are different. Sufferers of primary Lymphoedema are normally born with the condition although no symptoms may be present initially, as life progresses more stresses and strains have to be bourn by most of our body mechanisms and this is certainly true of the Lymphatic system, if primary Lymphoedema is a factor then as the system becomes overloaded, problems begin to surface and help is needed. Secondary Lymphoedema is not something people are born with but rather a condition that has a definite cause, often as a result of intensive treatment administered to combat cancers or other life threatening illnesses. Radiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy can all cause Lymphoedema which may also be a secondary effect of the illness these treatments are administered to counter.
The therapist may use a technique known as Manual Lymphatic Drainage or MLD involving a range of rhythmic, specialised and gentle pumping techniques to move the skin in the direction of the lymph flow. This stimulates the lymphatic vessels, which Lymphatic Therapists say carry substances vital to the defence of the body, and removes waste products.
Often treatment will include a tailored exercise regime to further stimulate
the Lymphatic system, increasing flow and reducing swelling.
