Information About The Bowen Technique
What is the Bowen Technique ?
The bowen technique is a therapy devised by Tom Bowen in Geelong, Victoria,
Australia. The system is designed to stimulate the body to heal itself.
The therapist makes a variety of 'moves' across the skin surface
of a particular body area, these areas tend to be over muscles and/or
tendons. A steady, light and gentle pressure is applied to the relevant
area whilst the Bowen move is being performed, the process is entirely
pain free and should induce a state of deep relaxation. These 'Bowen
moves' stimulate a response from the body resulting in an overall
improvement of health and a speeding up of the healing process.
During
the treatment the therapist will take frequent breaks, typically
leaving the treatment room for a few minuets at a time. These breaks
are an integral part of the technique, the theory being that the
body needs time to decide on an appropriate reaction to a 'move',
pausing for a short while allows the body time to make the most beneficial
decision and react accordingly.
A course of treatment will normally consist of from 4 to 6 sessions evenly
spaced between 5 and 7 days apart. Initially the patient may experience
some reactions to the treatment, sometimes the problem the patient
is seeking help for may get worse, sometimes other reactions occur
such as headaches, tiredness, a general unwell and /or an increase
in dream activity. It is imperative the patient does not stop the
treatment as a result of these reactions also during the
course of the treatment period the patient should not undergo any
other therapies.
What will a treatment session be like ?
During a treatment session the patient is usually lying or sitting
comfortably. The patient can often remain clothed
but some therapists prefer to work directly on the skin. During the
first session the therapist will normally address the whole body
of the patient, starting with the legs and lower back and moving
up to the shoulders and neck area. Several 'Bowen moves' will be
performed punctuated with frequent breaks as described above. Most
therapists will give advise about the possible reactions to the treatment
and the patient should leave the treatment room in a relaxed mood
with a general sense of well-being.
