There are now over 2300 members who use acupuncture in hospital or general practice. Additionally there are sections for dentists and vets. A number of other organisations are affiliated. The BMAS promotes the use of acupuncture as a therapy following orthodox medical diagnosis by suitably trained practitioners. The British Acupuncture Council The British Acupuncture Council is the UK's main regulatory body for the practice of acupuncture by over 2500 professionally qualified acupuncturists. The Acupuncture Society The Acupuncture Society is a professional body of acupuncture practitioners recognised by the London Local Authorities on 29th October 1996 under the London Local Authorities Act 1991 section (4). The Acupuncture Society was formed to promote the development of TCM as an effective medical practice and at the same time to serve as a bridge to modern medicine. Members are bound by a strict Code of Ethics, Rules and Regulations and a Code of Professional Conduct. They are obliged to comply with local health authority safety, hygiene and sterilisation requirements and carry full indemnity insurance. Northern College of Acupuncture College is based in York, UK, where students can take degrees in acupuncture and chinese medicine.
