Phobia Or Fear Of Elevators Or Lifts

Claustrophobia

This one tends to be linked to more general claustrophobia, the general fear of trapped in enclosed spaces and unable to get out.  Sometimes a person develops claustrophobia although sometimes it someone develops it as a phobia in its own right.

Where does my fear of elevators (lifts) come from?

Most of you reading this will probably know where the problem started.  You will remember being trapped in a lift that got stuck, or being hemmed in inside an overcrowded lift, suddenly developing the overwhelming urge to get out but being unable to until it gets to the next floor.

What Will You Do To Help Me To Stop Being Afraid?

Whether you clearly remember the original incident or whether you have no idea where your problem came from, the techniques to cure phobias are the same, and highly effective either way. We are dealing here with what is basically a habit in the mind, a kind of mental knee-jerk response to a certain stimulus, ie think about a lift, feel afraid. Everyone with this kind of ‘terror’ imagines they will be terrified just at the thought of getting into an elevator.

Not ‘desensitisation’ or ‘talking about the problem’

In past years the therapy would have been either talking to you about your problem in the hope that talking about it will help you come to terms with it. This simply doesn’t work. Then there are a range of desensitising techniques that aim to very gradually, over a period of time, get you used to the idea, maybe learning to be more relaxed standing next to an elevator, then going in and out of it while it is ‘locked’ on that floor, for longer and longer periods of time. Then eventually you get to go up or down one floor. Then you practise doing that, again and again. These cognitive techniques can be quite effective over time, but they are painful, and they are slow, and the fear of lifts can be cured very quickly indeed.

So How Do Hypnotherapy And NLP Work?

The tried and tested reconditioning techniques such as the NLP Fast Phobia Cure tend to be the most effective way of dealing with these issues. We don’t have to talk to you about it; we just build powerful pleasant conditioned responses and then ‘attach’ them to the thought of going into a lift or elevator. There a great number of other approaches that have proven themselves to be useful. Even floating back into the past and getting you to view yourself in a past scary experience whilst being comfortable doing so can work for some people. We simply use what works best for you.

So How Long Is It Going To Take To Cure My Phobia Of Lifts?

Typically this takes one session, occasionally it may take more, and we are successful with the vast majority of clients with this issue. So please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
